This is a lovely little Satsuma vase I recently found.
It is typical of export ware from the 1920s/30s,and although the hand painting is not exceptional, it's pretty good.
After identifying this vase and reading about the style on gotheborg.com, it seems this style of painted ceramic was made mainly for export, and was not sold much in Japan.
The base marks read Satsuma Nippon, and according to a knowledgeable and helpful member of the Japanese ceramic facebook group, the red mark around the edge reads "ho", probably the decorator.
I find it quite charming and pretty!
Height: 15cm
Such a lovely vase Karen, 15cm is a great size:-)
Beautiful vase Karen, love the pastoral scene with the two geisha ladies
Thanks Judy! It's a great size, fits nicely in a small spot. Most of my glass is gargantuan compared to it!
Isn't it charming Jenni! So glad you like it, and thanks :)
Ohh, Karen, lovely piece!
Nearly two different vases from one side to the other, a bright scene with the red leaves, then a peaceful landscape :-)
Happy new collecting year, in health and... wealth :-D
Love it Karen...Satsuma my fav... such vivid colors and as you say it's like "two for the price of one". :)
Very pretty and colors are really nice!
Thanks Pascale for the lovely comment. I love both sides too.
Happy collecting year to you!
Great to hear from you Mike, and happy new year! I hope your stall continues to go well, although I would like to see more stuff from you, please!
Thank you MrsT, glad you like it!
Love this! I don't know why I was surprised to see that it's yours... probably because it's not glass ?!?
