I found this string of pearls in a jewelry box that was just thrown away. I live in an apartment building that has many senior citizens, and unfortunately that happens alot here. People pass on and the relatives come and just throw the poor person's belongings away without a care as to what they had. The relatives just want to get it over with. I find it sad that a person's worldly goods, whether valuable or not, are just trash to relatives who should give a darn about it. I sometimes find things, like this necklace in a jewelry box, and decide to keep them to at least, in part, pay homage to a life now gone.
Anyhow, this is a string of Cultured Pearls that are heavy, hand strung and knotted. They are 18 inches in length and have a Fish Hook Filigreed 14kt White Gold closure. They are beautiful, I wear these all the time because I just love pearls. I think about the woman who owned these and wonder if her mother had them before her. And I hope she would be all right with me holding on to them until I pass them to my son's wife.
Is 14k the only mark? Is there an M on it? That would be for Mikimoto. A real treasure for sure! But it's all good if not, I'm pretty sure it's appreciated!!! ;)
I took these pearls with me a few years ago to a pawn shop close to where I live. I have gone there for a long time, I take my rings and necklaces in to have them deep cleaned every once in a blue moon. I had the lady look at these and she tested the metal. She asked me if I planned on selling these and I said no, and she said nothing more about them. She never told me about these being Mikimoto, but I did check some of those out on Ebay to see if I saw a similarity. I did see a couple with a fishhook closure similar to this strand, but I do not think these are Mikimoto. Most of the strands I looked at had a Pearl attached to the closure, and this does not have that. I think I will just leave it at that and enjoy these as I have since I got them. I love wearing them, my mom has the strand that her mom wore. The both of them gave me the same love for pearls, mom has a picture of my gran in her 20's wearing her strand. She was so pretty, I miss her very much.
Tlynnie, you deserve wearing those pearls, I'm sure the original owner would be moved by your intention to pay homage to her :-)
I too feel bad seeing all memories and belongings of a deceased one thrown away as trash...
Beautiful find!
These are beautiful, I love pearls too and I am very glad you wear them in remembrance of the owner who I am sure would be very happy with you being the caretaker of them:-)
It seems that relatives really do not have a sentimental bone in their bodies these days......sad isn't it!

Thank you for the kind words! It is sad to see someone's life thrown out, and it happens here more times than I care to count. I am happy that my family here are all very close to each other. Our family is very small, with relatives on both sides leaving this Earth too soon. I think it makes us closer to each other knowing we are all we have here and now. I know I will be taken well care of in my later years (coming fast LOL) by a loving son who loves my little collections as much as I do and would not dream of tossing any of it!
nutsabotas6, thank you very much :)
It is so hard to guess as a lot of makers used similar findings. A lot of companies at this time did not put their name to the piece, however it seems more of them marked the earrings in a set. Sometimes that help with sets from Sherman I know.
PhilDMorris, there was no set of earrings with this strand. So I guess I will never know for sure the maker of these. But they are beautiful, I have always loved the coolness of Pearls when you first put them on.
Enjoy the holiday weekend Tlynnie

So glad you saved them!
