Has anyone any thoughts on its attribution???? I think it is similar to the work of the NZ jewellery Elsie Reeves, but it isn't???!!!

Hi Kiwitaia, some people come here to learn and others come to share their treasures. I have an opinion on your pendant but I don't think it's going to be what you expect. If you want to know it, let me know & I'm happy to share.

Yes, Jewels, I am happy to hear whatever you think, I can agree or disagree.

Cool, that wasn't meant to to sound patronising either. Some members of the community don't always want to know so I check first.

I think your pendant was originally a German brooch. If you look closely, you can see the leaves on the bale are slightly different to the leaves on the drop. Also, you can see top & bottom of the drop it looks like a somethings been removed, probably the pin & catch.

Brooches are unpopular at the moment and I'm seeing many of these conversions pop up, particularly on eBay. It's a good time to buy very beautiful brooches if you like them.

Thank you Jewels for your opinion, I am happy to consider anything, and yes, the leaves are smaller on the top of the bale, I agree, but I think that's in keeping with the piece. The other point, is that I have owned this piece for years. But next time I visit my jeweller, I will ask him to have a close look.

It's a bit hard to tell but your leaf could also be this one - https://www.rubylane.com/item/872660-RL1656/Antique-Cork-Irish-Arts-Crafts-Sterling?search=1

Sometimes this type of leaf work can be hard to pinpoint. I know we've discussed them before. Hope that helps anyway.

I have certainly learned from the link that you sent me. Thank you so much! There is also a Cork Arts & Crafts brooch where the leaf work is remarkably similar to my pendant. I had never hear of Cork Arts & Crafts so I will be keeping an eye out in future.

Hi Kiwitaia, I think these pieces are manufactured so very unlikely to be made by a Cork Arts & Crafts movement which you'd expect to produce handmade jewellery.

It was very popular at the time to import or buy jewellery from a supplier & mark it with your own mark. MB & Co were very well known for this, they imported jewellery from various factories in Germany and marked it with the MBCo mark for retail in the UK. That's why sometimes you see a Farhner piece with a MBCo mark as well. Liberty also directly had pieces made in Germany in Knox designs (usually unmarked). Even jewellers like Dunlop bought pieces from Instone and put her mark on them. I also think it was common for some of the Hatton Garden jewellers like Thomas Mott to buy some of their stock from Germany and put their mark on it.

This particular type of leaf is even more tricky to pinpoint because Shiptons made a brooch with a very similar leaf until quite recently.

My experience with it is that they are most commonly unmarked but occasionally I see them marked Germany (I have a ring very very similar ring to the Cork example marked Germany). Very occasionally I see one with a makers mark on it. Very occasionally I see a version enamelled.

In the early days of my collecting I used to see them quite a lot, but not so much anymore (like everything). But when I come across some I'll post a link for you so you can see the variations.

Kyra also knows about them, I think she has a Shiptons version posted.

Curious, I've never seen a clasp before or one with an etched design in the stone, however, the leaf & berry work is very similar to your pendant.

I have to say I don't agree with some of these comments , I have been dealing for many years in A&C, ect it was common in the day if the customer could not get the matching pendant the jeweller would convert a matching brooch , this was done with all types of jewellery the

You are such an observant lady. Yes jewels, the leaf work is similar, by the by, I have a string of glass faceted beads with a very similar design to that catch. I understood that they were Czech.

I wish I had known you when I first started buying and collecting many years ago. I would not have let so much stuff go, selling it along the way. I was about to sell a Fahrner pendant in its padded box, but my dear husband said, 'don't sell it'. A few years ago, before everybody knew about Fahrner, I had a lot of it, the Fahrner pendant and a necklace is all I have left and I am keeping them. Considering that I paid under $50 for most of my pieces and now what you have to pay!!
So now, I am going to be a collector!!
