Just acquired this chest or trunk and no idea where it originated. It was representated as a Dutch sea captains chest. Iron is in good shape, heavy and sturdy. Measure some approx. 47” x 27” x 27”. I was thinking about making it into a cool wine rack but did not want to diminish the value so need advice on altering it vs. leaving it alone if it truly has value in its original state. Any thoughts would be much appreciated!

Beautiful! Looks real to me. Iacobus, i.e. Jacob. Oak wood. If you want to use it as a wine rack, can you keep it untouched and still insert a custom made wine rack whilst keeping the chest intact? Maybe tilt it on its side and use the lid as a door? I would. I agree it's tempting to use it for something cool rather than just have it sitting in a corner.

Thanks for your insight! Super helpful and I love the idea of maybe making a pedestal for it and sitting it upright!
