Here's one more that seems appropriate today, as I continue to watch the horrible nasty white [4 letter word for winter precipitation] disappear outside my windows...it should be nearly gone completely by this time tomorrow. :-) :-) :-)
This was recovered from one of the outbuildings at Mom and Dad's (former) farm last summer. Probably Grandma/Grandpa's at first, it might have spent its later years warming chickens instead of them...who knows. "Model No. 294A", made by "PRACTICAL ELEC. PRODUCTS INC., N.Y.C.". It is now dirty and rusty, "as found". (but I bet it still works, if I plugged it in to find out, which I did not...?) The cast iron base has a cool pattern cast into its top and (not seen) the PRAK-T-KAL name and model number on its underside, and also holds an on/off switch. I would guess (but didn't confirm) that its heating element is likely configured like a light bulb and can actually be unscrewed and removed...it seems like these old heaters now commonly tend to get 'repurposed' as "steampunk desk lamps". <groan> Guessing it is 1940's-50's in age.
I haven't seen any with the gooseneck before. Neat heater.
Sooo....what are you groaning for? I've seen some cool old repurposed lamps made from these. Nowdays....If I want heat...I'll cozy up next to my girl near a fireplace. BTW...I love snow....each to their own.
Thanks much to fortapache, iggy, and Irishcollector for the <loves> -- and buckethead, the 'groan' is only for the "steampunk" term, which nowadays seems all too often to be applied to any random assortment of old crap (starting w/something like this heater?) all glued together, then called "art" and somehow magically becoming worth major buck$...?? <groaning, again...I can't help myself...> I guess I just tend to prefer said individual objects in their unmolested state. :-) Sure it *could* be a lamp but it was supposed to be (and still is) a heater, first...in fact if it'd have come to me without its element/etc it'd probably *be* a lamp by now...but it didn't, so a heater it'll stay... ;-) :-)
Oh -- and to fortapache -- the 'gooseneck' design of this thing, though indeed perfectly valid for a desk lamp, probably truly *wasn't* the safest/smartest idea for a 300w space heater...though it does appear that these aren't anywhere near 'uncommon' now (thus must have been produced in good quantity?) one also has to wonder about the reasons why they suddenly were *not* produced anymore...? (there *is* after all, probably a good safety reason why space heaters today generally all point in a 'forward and slightly up' non-adjustable direction...?) I wouldn't be surprised if more than a few folks ultimately lost their houses etc to these things, after they inadvertently (or not?) ended up getting pointed at things (the floor, the drapes, etc?) which they shouldn't have really been allowed to get close to...?? <eeek>
