Is it rare to have an error such as this? Would this coin be worth any money (besides a dollar)? Thanks! The name is Paul

It's an 1887 silver dollar by the way

This 1887 Morgan Silver Dollar seems to have a fragment attached from another coin. These aren't very common on older coins such as this. This was from part of a coin fragment that was already struck, and when the full coin was made, it was punched while the fragment was in a weird position.

May we see more pics of the edge, the hand done dots tell me it's not a mint error, at least not a US Mint error.

@TubeAmp I posted two more pictures, do those help?

It looks like possibly a hinge or something else was added. Is there a seam on the edge all around the coin? Maybe it was used as a key ring, watch fob, or money clip.
(Unfortunately it destroys it's collectibility value).

@TubeAmp I thought that because of the placement it wouldn't make sense for it to be an add on. I would have thought it would have been centered. The dots on the fragment line up with the lines on the side of the coin? Could it be a cutting error or are you confident it was an add on?

It's not an error. The blanks drop into the press where several dies strike the coin. A collar die provides the reeded edge. It doesn't allow for a piece of flashing to stick out like that.
Plus your coin has a strange color/toning, maybe from being heated. Also it has an odd line around the rim. If it was made by casting, I would call the attached metal a sprue.

      Have it weighed in grams...
