This brooch is another mystery: The carved lacquer part certainly reminds me of Chinese pieces but the setting doesn't quite match - or does it? The silver setting (it reminds me of European, early to close to mid 1900's pieces) consists of lovely rosebuds and marcasite accents. The only mark I can see is "Silver" just past the 12 o'clock position in the second photo.

Any help of comments are greatly appreciated.

    Thanks for looking:)

"In the Chinese culture, the chrysanthemum signifies a life of ease. Buddhists are fond of using this flower as offerings on alters. Symbolic of powerful Yang energy, this flower is an attractant of good luck in the home."

I don't think the flowers around the border of the brooch are chrysanthemums - but I do think it's possible that they 'got together' in some way. I expect the centre is some kind of resin.

It reminds me of necklace with lapis lazuli and gold by Frank Gardner Hale.

The carved bit does remind me of carved cinnabar but blue instead of red! I wonder if it was originally in that setting.

Oh my dear, I have not checked this post for a while. Thanks to all of you for your comments and help! Gillian, thanks so much for your insight. I learned something very interesting about the meaning/symbolism. After checking the brooch again, I think that your are correct about the center part being resin:)

Pepple, I was thinking, too, that the setting doesn't quite match - not in a physical was because it fits snugly together - but in a stylistic way. Similar pieces were not set in silver, and if they were, the style was different, mostly some kind of filigree. I found a ring setting almost identical to my brooch but the stone was missing. I will keep searching online for more information:)

Tigra, thanks for your comment too! He created some wonderful piece! looking at his designs, I could see that my setting may be from the same time period like his:)

Shareurpassion, me too. When I first looked at images I thought it could be lapis but the material seems to light for lapis lazuli:(
      Thanks for your comment.

Mary, I am sorry I missed your comment. You are right about the celluloid. I have a celluloid brooch but I think the finishing in my blue one is much better and more detailed. Here is my celluloid brooch: https://www.collectorsweekly.com/stories/82686-my-bargain-find
