I have had this for some time in storage. It's a beautiful old ceramic made in Italy, blue ware bird cage. It stands around 2 feet tall and is marked Italy on bottom. The lady I got it from put the ceramic bird in there so I just left it as it's cute.
Very pretty - I thought you had a real parakeet in there, it's so lifelike!
Absolutely charming! Have you researched comparable pieces to get an idea of its age?
Thanks All for the love and Newfld its a vintage japan ceramic parrot that just seems to fit there. AJAsian I have not really checked it out I just put it up, at the time I picked a lot of items that I'm just getting back to.
I believe you have a bit more than a bird cage here and a very decorative one. Looking at the shape, size, material and how decorative it is, I believe what you have is an old decorative wedding bird cage. Usually there were flowers in the bottom and sometimes a white candle would be in the middle of the bottom with the flowers around it. Less fancy ones that were all or mostly wire would be placed out and people attending the wedding would slide a wedding card into the cage. The cage would be locked as the cards usually contained money for the newly weds. I believe the custom started in Asia and the cages were normally either dome shaped or like a Pagoda type design.
Thank You fhrjr2 for the information, Its nice to learn about history and I'll check this out.
I do feel you have something quite valuable there.
Collectables59 - You are quite right. The fancier ones can be worth a hefty sum. I will provide a link below, if you scroll down the page they show a more simple cage decorated for an actual wedding.
