This is a woodblock made by artist Alec Cowan (1912-1985) in 1963, named "The Return". The woodblock itself is 12x16, and with the matting it measures 15x19 inches. I got this from a good friend who passed from Pancreatic Cancer in 2013. He got many of his paintings, drawings, and woodblocks from actor Tony Curtis. Jim was great friends with Mr. Curtis for many years while he lived in Los Angeles and Hollywood and was gifted many pieces of art and Jim also bought some from him. I remember Jim telling me once that Lily Tomlin asked him if she could buy something that Mr. Curtis gave him, she liked it and wanted it.
While I really like this, I also get kind of a creepy feeling from it sometimes. It kinda reminds me of Stephen King's, "Pet Sematary" sometimes, I don't know why I get that from this LOL!
I have only found one other woodblock that is identical to mine. I have found many other works by Cowan and some with color.
This is awesome. I love this style of woodcut, classic. I can see the vibe you get from this, and it probably does as well.
Thank you for your comment, rockbat. I think I get the creepy feeling from the fact that the woodblock looks to me to be two halves: The house that looks smaller than the girl and her cat, and the large flora and fauna around them. That and the negative coloring makes it look like the whole setting is underground. That is my take on it anyways.
