The curving shape of the figure is meant to imply that it was carved from an ivory tusk, so the first thing to determine is whether it really is ivory. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/antiquesfyi/tips/damagedone/index.html

If the material is plastic, then we'd have to go to the books to see when imperial China was carving plastic, or you can guess the answer to that one. On the other hand, if it's ivory, then there are very strict laws in place regarding its movement.

How would these laws apply to me? This was a gift?

I’ve picked it up and it’s cold not warm as well it’s very very very heavy and there are no seams!

Laws regarding elephant ivory are complicated: http://fitzgibbonlaw.com/understanding-ivory-law/

Also this was given as a gift from the grandmother or maybe great grandmother a very long time ago it’s been in her family for decades and gifting me it should not put me into any legal issues and it’s quite old looking as well so this could be grandfathered

I trully believe this art piece is at least 100 years Old and possibly older!

You don't need to be concerned about any of that if it's not ivory. We can't see from this picture, but you can take a magnified look at the base and the top of the figure (if the material is exposed), and inspect the surface of the material (try the shiny forehead). Is it featureless plastic, or is it an organic material like ivory or bone? http://www.ebay.com/gds/How-to-Tell-if-IVORY-is-Genuine-or-Not-Includes-Pics-/10000000010311348/g.html

Wiping an area with my saliva does not take out the color this whole piece does not have any areas on it to enlighten me to see the grain or absent of it is totally carved from top to bottom side to side completely covered in carvings!

I don’t think it’s cast I think it’s carved if you think it’s casted how did you derive to this conclusion? And how did you determine resin vs ivory? What is your qualifications to determine this tube amp (ta) ?

Any ideas on age and it is yellowed and the color does not wipe off

I have a few similar Asian type carvings and they are neither Ivory nor cast. They are hand carved from alabaster. Alabaster is very heavy and dense yet fairly easy to carve. I notice in picture #2 a piece of the nose has broken off. That might be the ideal place to have an expert inspect.

      And it’s not alabaster...

Only a suggestion TubeAmp, don't get excited. Maybe the lady put it in the dryer with some coins and the nose broke ;) Have a fun day.

I don’t get childishly riled up about this stuff — not to worry, it’s more of a feeling of embarrassment really. You have a great day as well!
