Vintage oak Windsor style cane back chair with red tufted vinyl seat that has spring rocking mechanism beneath the seat and four fixed legs like a normal chair. Chair rocks from seat only. Trying to find more info, manufacturer, date made, what was it used for; office, library, home?? Was it manufactured this way or modified? Would appreciate any information available about this chair.
What you have is a circa 1895 oak spring rocker. The form is more recognized as a captains chair than windsor chair. The 1890's showed a lot of mechanical innovation in furniture, thus the spring rocker mechanism. I think the size of this spring lended itself to breaking so there are not a lot of examples of this chair that survived. I found one other example.

rocker-sd that is a great search string. Did you include the + between words or did AOL search add them? Most people don't know to use them.
Not quite the exact same one , but close. I think this was more of a office chair, than a rocker. It was manufactured this way but probably not in hugh quantities. I don't feel the red cushion is original to the chair, would help to see a better shot of the bottom of the chair and a picture without the cushion if it isn't permanently attached.
fhrjr2, just used keywords that were apparent to me when viewing it. I had pretty good idea what it was, but always like to confirm before posting.
OK, I just wondered when I saw the keyword combination. I frequently use the + or Boolean operators for searches to narrow it down.
Thank you all, esp. rocker-sd. This was as found, have no idea of repairs or alterations to it, adding a couple more photos of base and top. Agree that vinyl top was probably added later. Works as should, hope to find it a new home eventually.

I have a similar chair with original cane back and cane seat. On mine, the barrel shaped cane back extends almost to the seat with a continuous wood center support behind the caning (from the seat to the top of the back) and short supports to either side of center. Same carved front and turned legs.
There are two similar ones on this site posted late 2019/early 2020. That owner says that her mother obtained them from a collector and that they were used in train stations for desk workers. Any confirmation of that?

I have this same style of chair. I realize this post is 2 years old. But I was hoping to be able find out more about it. And what it is worth. I am trying to decide if I should hold on to it or sell it. Mine does not have a cushioned seat. Plus the cane is pushing out of the back.
Hi, saw your post about your chair. I had one as well (see my post of 3 months ago). I am not at liberty to tell you how much it sold for as a designer bought it for a client, but you can google Antique English Cane Desk Chair and scroll down until you see the listing on Chairish - that was it. It sold very quickly. However, it was in great shape; yours having caning damage will reduce the value (IMO) as those repairs are very pricey. Good luck in your quest to learn more.
Oh Thank you! I doubt if I can get that kind of price. The cane has some kind of dried up goop covering part of it too. Not sure what it is . That is why it has been a basement chair. I like it because it is so different. I just may end up keeping it and selling mid-century cricket rocker . Do you know who made the chair?

Sorry, I had attempted to learn who made it, but no luck with that. Another posted that she thought it was French, not English, due to the curved back. Could be correct.
I sure seems like an office chair. But you'd think it would have wheels if it was.
Congratulations on the sale of your chair. Most of the information that we have for ours came from this thread. Someone had told me that they thought it was an office chair or from a fire house and Sears Roebuck may have sold them. My vinyl seat is definitely a replacement but mechanism works and while we had at once hope to sell it, I think it has grown on us. But if someone to make an offer anywhere close to your sales price I might reconsider. Sorry for the delay in responding.
