I thought this a rather charming piece of carving of impressive size and presence. A rather bright eyed friendly faced fellow?
He is constructed from wood blocks which were glued together and then carved, then covered in a thin coat of gesso (a type of plaster often applied to wood prior to painting or gilding) and finally painted.
The mane and tail are from dyed unraveled hemp rope to give the appearance of horse hair. The ears are actually painted leather. It has taxidermy eyes.
No, not very old. Probably the middle 1/3 or so of the 20th century. Still, I feel well done and within the realm of folk or "outsider" art.
