      Its like a very large safety pin. Grandpa used something like that to hang hogs for butchering. just a guess.

      afterthought that is what meat hooks are for. Normally pigs are hung on a double hook with one hook through each hind leg so it hangs upside down. This one would be more for a side of beef or side of pork as opposed to the entire pig. Most butcher shops have them, farms and they are used in tractor trailers transporting sides of beef from the slaughter house. Commonly called swinging beef.
