I have inherited my grandmother's silver tea set. On the bottom it has stamped a crown, a cross, and the letters M B &S in that order. I've searched the web and have found no maker that corresponds. The pieces have an inscription to my family dated 1863.

Can anyone identify or point me in a good direction? I'd like to know the make and the history if possible.

The crown represents Sheffield and perhaps the cross is possibly a lower case T, meaning made in 1834. Although it does look like a cross which is baffling, because assay marks were well instituted and followed in English silver.
Also there is no lion mark stamped for sterling silver, and I can't find MB&S. Baffling.
I suggest you take it to a silversmith for checking, or possibly even contact a museum, such as the V&A.
