SpiritBear in his post, "Finds in Bibles", one of the finds was a American Red Cross instructions on the "Influenza Epidemic" in the 1918-1920 era. They were told to wear a mask when attending to patients.
This is a photo of my great-aunt, a nurse at that time, wearing her mask. The back of the photo has her name and 1918 flu epidemic.
Posted so you can see the reality of the time.

Caperkid, I'm not sure, but with the leaf hanging below, I would guess it is some kind of home herb remedy to ward off the flu.

Great piece of history and we all just about need to wear a mask now if out of house . I hope Flu epidemic is almost over .
