I don’t know what time period this is from and if “magican” is supposed to be “magician”. Just want to know the history behind it

This is an old handmade Immigrant trunk, probably from around mid 1800's hard to pinpoint an exact time, but I think before 1880, many Immigrant's brought these trunks from Europe, when they came to America back in the 1800's. The metal strip that say's Magican, appears to have been cut from something and nailed in by someone for what ever reason, your guess is as good as mine, greendog.

Would you you think the paint is original? Or know a value of the trunk?

Hard to say, what I don't see is layers of paint,( different colors) I bought a trunk similar to this and it had 10 or 12 coats of paint, black, green, yellow etc. I really believe that most Immigrant trunks were unpainted by the person who built it, it was a nonessential, the trunk was simply built to get what personal belongings they had from point A to point B. The paint looks old and could have been done any time after they came to america. Were not supposed to give values or appraisal, sorry greendog.
