Hello everyone!!!
Here is, what I believe to be a Christopher Columbus match safe. I bought this about a year ago in a antique shop. It's not in my realm of collecting, but it caught my eye and I bought it. I've seen many of these unpainted, but I hadn't seen one that was painted, like this one is. It's cast iron, of course, and measures about 4 1/4" long and 2 5/8" wide. This would normally mount on the kitchen wall, typically close to the wood fired cook stove.
Though, I do not believe this to be an original, as there are no markings on the back, like the original would have. However, I could be wrong about that and it could possibly be an original, but I doubt it. As far as reproductions go, this one is a very well cast and painted reproduction.
Thanks for stopping by for a look!!

Nice painted image of Columbus here - I'm venturing a guess you store matches in the space atop his head, behind the feather, or maybe in the back somewhere - either way as Thomas said, quite unique & cool too
Thanks T.!!!!
Thanks Jenni!!
Yes, you'd store stick matches into the pouch shown in pic #2.

Very nice. A lot of times on match holders there would be a rough spot to strike your matches, but i do not see one on this, guess you use the wall, or your shoe.
Hi rockbat!!
Thanks very much! You're right about the striker. But, I have one other match holder from the late 1800's that also has no striker. As you said, perhaps they used their shoe or the wall.
Thanks kivatinitz!!! So glad you like it.
