My son was on deployment last year, he has been in the Navy for the past 16 years. He went in right out of high school, he graduated on June 4, 2002 and left for boot camp on June 15, 2002. While out this last deployment they made a stopover in Latvia. It is a very small place and the people are mostly poor. While there, my son went into the village with some other officers and found these Matryoshka Nesting Dolls. He remembered that I had talked of having a small set of dolls as a little girl and wanting to get another set someday, and he got these for me. The owner of the antique shop said they were over 40 years old, but they do not look that old to me. I did not have the heart to tell him that though, I was just happy he thought of me and got them for me :)

There are 10 dolls, the largest being 15 inches tall down to the smallest being 1 inch tall. They are hand painted and beautiful, with the woman wearing a golden hat with a Babushka wrapped around her head. There are beautiful flowers, I am not sure what the pink ones are but the Daisies are wonderfully done and they are on both the front and back. The doll sits on my end table near my desk so I can see it when I am sitting there. My son is one great kid, I tell you :) I know he is 34 now and towers over me when he is next to me, but I will always call him "Kid".

    Enjoy the pics :)

PhilDMorris, Betweenthelens, Manikin, Newfld, TimeTraveler, thank you for the wonderful comments. My son is the best! I miss him so much, for the last 16 years I have only been able to see him a couple times out of the year. I am very much looking forward to when he retires at 20 years.

Tlynnie, your story is heart-warming...What a great son you have!
One way to tell how old they are is to look for some type of mark on the bottom of the largest matreshka. They would be marked in different ways pre- and post- 1991. Can you take a photo of the bottom if there's anything there?

      Anna,
The bottom is painted over with the pink color. There is no mark or signature on the dolls, that is how I know they are not old. But I did not say anything to Chris about it, they are beautiful and I love them. I am happy in the knowledge that while he was on deployment, with so many things on his mind with his job, that he remembered me talking about the nesting dolls I had as a child. He is a good kid :)
