Sorry, but this isn't Native American. It was made in Pakistan, from date palm fiber.
The designs are often copied from Native American Indian baskets, but the colors used, and the material itself, are found only on these imports. No Native American tribe makes baskets like this.
Unfortunately, they are sold all over the country, especially in "Indian Country" trading posts and souvenir shops. They come into this country with paper tags, which are usually gone by the time they appear for sale. It's a federal offense to sell them as Native American Indian baskets, but often the sellers don't make that claim, they just hope the buyer will assume they are.
They usually have a braided or herringbone rim finish, and the outside has a rougher finish than the inside.
Excellant info CanyonRoad, as always!!!
Great information, CanyonRoad. A person like me, with no knowledge of these baskets, would be very easily fooled into believing it is Native American :(
Having said that, it's still a lovely piece, but such a huge shame that it was made with the intention to deceive buyers.
Thanks for solving the mystery, CanyonRoad, looks like the poster didn't care as much as pretended.
