I always wondered about this trunk ..it was my second one purchased. I really like the die cast trims and basic pirate looking format. It has the what I believe to be from looking at other Martin Meir trunks by you fellows the proper hinge. Although no trims possess the "M" logo monogram, it does however have several similar die-cast trims that I have seen on other Martin Meir trunks. So the question is, Just by having the patented hinge, would that constitute it as a Martin Meir or did they make available to others this hinge set-up? Thanks!
Yes, definitely Martin Maier hinges, and no I don't believe he sold or allowed anyone to use his patented hardware, this trunk was made by MM, I have seen one almost identical to this it was a gold crystallized tin, greendog.
Thanks so much Greendog..So I have found a Martin Maier! Certainly not as ornate as the beauty you posted ....but I'll take it..lol I believe this one was gold crystal as well. The area where the handle cap was, reveals gold crystal foundation then green paint , the a puke yellow paint and then a red paint so three coats. I hope I can get that black out of the wood. Thanks again!! Very much appreciated!
I also found out through Jim Cardoza at HMS antique trunks, that Martin Maier built trunks for other trunk Company's such as Beals and Selkirk, I did one for a customer that I posted a while back, it had MM hinges but had a Beals and Selkirk label on the inside, greendog.
?? Still be classified as a Martin Maier ?
I would say so, yes.
Cool! Thanks greendog for the reassurance and input.
