I bought this on E-bay. It was advertised as a "Vintage Rock Climbing Rappelling Gear Block-Rope Tree Climbing" piece. Seller also indicated, "Old school...1920-1930’s EST". Could be piece of linesmen, lumbering, construction, agricultural piece. Has number 35 on one side, 34 on other. Three letters also, but I can't make them out.

I am unsure if seller is knowledgable or just guessing. Is anyone familiar with this device, know how and under what circumstances it was used, etc.?

Nice piece - no idea what it is but: I've been on ebay for 20 years and a I can absolutely guaran-dam-tee you that many sellers are not knowledgeable! :-) Good luck with the ID.
Does it come apart? It looks like if you pull on the hook the piece at the other end unlatches (?)

C'mon inbred, does it come apart and look like TMonty's half? Dying to know!

When your lucky enough to have any sort of marks, you need to play them out. Wire brush all, then try the white chalk method across the ridges. If that does not work, try the white paper, and pencil shade method, to raise the 3 letters. My first two WAGs are lineman's rope repel rig, and or large Antenna Guy wire tensioner. Just guesses, tho. PS I agree Horseradishman1 in that we need to see more of it.

Since we have no response from the OP, i will keep guessing, if thats ok? I believe the open eye in the center end, is a trigger release, and either a wire rope, or other rope is fed thru a pinching brake mechanism inside, which is released by pulling it?

Never thought of that, Frisco. Alternately, it could be used to lift something and the trigger, when pulled, releases the other end to drop it (?) (Although that doesn't explain why there are two holes at each end.) Where's fhrjr2 when we need him?
It amazes me how many people post stuff here and don't answer questions.
