See the difference with my previous post?
I had the case before of a big opal bought in good condition... I had the bad surprise to find it full of important crazing after some years of storage in its sealed box :-(
I read somewhere soaking it in oil may fill the cracks and improve the appearance.
I did it, using a cosmetic "dry" oil, in fact thinner than olive or other food oil...
It worked!!! I only had to repeat once the "treatment" done one year ago :-D
I must say I have another opal which showed no improvement at all...
So, I scraped carefully the glue remains, gave it a slight filing with my 4 steps nail buffer, then this huggie had its oil bathing for 2 hours.
A tissue wipe then a rub and polish with insect wax (used on jadeite by the Chinese)...
Et voilà! :-)

It is sooo beautiful!
Wow I love opals and the color is gorgeous and also your magic touch !
Wow!! You are quite the magician when it comes to jewelry. Amazing work!!
Thanks for this post Kyra, and as always we are amazed at your ingenuity and talent.
I have an opal brooch and one opal has a crack. I don't know what I should do with it. Would oil help you think?
Another gorgeous opal!
And of course, even more beautiful Pascale!
Very nice work!
You need to repair my aging body, it may be the highlight of your career ! Just Kidding, I love your work, very doctorial !~)
Pascale!! How great, I did not know about the oil and it sure has worked for you:-) Well done, you sure are one brave girl I think with having a go at doing this!!
Would this be a crystal opal? Just guessing lol
Yes, I can definitely see the difference! What a great job.
Freiheit, thank you !
Mani, you.re always so kind to me! Thanks for your wow comment, XOXO
Valentino, thanks, nice to see you and you enjoyed the improvement! I have no real project for it now... maybe a beetle body? ;-)
Scott, Betweenthelens, Jenni, Mrstyndall, thank you so much for your interest and kind comments :-)
Karen, you can put a drop of thin oil on your opal, it can’t harm! Just avoid to need cleaning the whole oily necklace... please tell me the result! Thanks for your visit and comment!
Phil, thank you, you may try oil bath too, good for joints and skin, lol :-))
Judy, thanks! I can’t find where I read about the oil for the cracks... they all say water or oil will do nothing against crazing..... for the huggie, it is rather translucent but so thick I don’t know if it is considered to be a crystal opal. I think it looks like a Coober Pedy stone. Maybe Paul could say?
Bonnie! Happy to see you! Yes the result is obvious indeed, thanks for your compliment!
I'm always amazed at your skill and ingenuity... Well done Kyra . :)
Aww, thank you Mike for your lovely visit and so kind comment!
Wow, that is an amazing amazing amazing transformation, Pascale!!! You truly are a gifted artist, so many jewels brought back to life in your talented hands. Thanks for sharing your treasures. :)
Aww Katherine! You are really an angel, I'm really happy you enjoyed my kyratised opal :-))
Sorry for the delay to answer, I don't receive CW emails when someone comment...
Really!!! This is good news to me. I would have never thought, wait...OMG! Ok, so you have an answer for Phil, his response was hilarious, now... how about my mind. Got a cure for that??? I don't know if I've ever heard this before. Oooohhhh, now I know what I was thinking... It was for that Monkey Pod wood and another wood I can't remember right now. I've used mineral oil but I have heard olive oil is good for that. I did not know bees wax (is that what you are saying?) is used for Jade/Jadeite??? If yes, good to know. Now, what about turquoise. I bet it would work for that too then, don't you think???
This opal is gorgeous! Thanks for the info! xoxo
Damned non notification from CW!!!
Share, lol! Try coffee... or mild neuroleptics... ;-)
Insect wax isn't the same as bees wax!

And it improve luster on turquoise, as if it has been repolished!
(NEVER use oil on turquoises!)
Very well done. Neil
Aww, thank you Neil! :-D
