When I found my first necklace by fellow Canadian Rafael Alfandary, I was instantly intrigued by his earlier work.
I assumed that it should be easy to find more of his pieces here in Canada, but I was wrong. There are very few dealers/stores in Toronto selling his work, but I couldn't find almost anything in antique and vintage stores/markets close to where I live. I don't buy much on line, but it seemed the best way of getting my hands on another of Rafael's creations. After missing out on a "Buy Now" offer (someone else beat me to it way before the auction ended), I purchased this necklace on the Internet for, what I believe, a really good price.
The necklace is really massive. The pendant is just shy of five inches. It is hand-made of copper and the center is glass. I remember reading somewhere that Rafael used Murano glass for his jewelry. There is some patina present but I just washed it gently with soap and water and didn't attempt to remove the patina. I think it has more character this way.
This is one of his more common designs. I will keep searching for rarer pieces.
I am sure there are not too many collectors sharing my enthusiasm for this piece, but I just love it. It really fits my slightly eccentric personality - LOL - and I cannot wait to wear it in the spring.
Thanks for looking:)
Congratulations on your 1000 post..and this is very cool..:-)
I love this penadant, so cool!
Congrats on 1000 too!!
Many thanks for your comment, inky! I am glad you find it cool, too:)
Many thanks, racer4four. I am glad you like it, too:)
Wow, you're 10 X more than my posts, congrats. I love the hand hammered look of this piece, beautiful !~
Thank you Phil. Numbers aren't everything. You have only posted exceptional pieces! I have a lot of simple stuff. I will make an effort to post less in the future but look for more quality or uniqueness.
And yes, I like the hammered look, too. It is my understanding that all of Rafael's pieces are hand made. When you look closely, you can see solder and tool marks on many of them:)
I'm in love with your necklace! Congratulations!
What a size!! What a find!!
Congrats on your 1000th post. Looking forward to many more ! :)
Woooh! 1000th post, CONGRATS!!!
Nice chunky necklace too :-)
Raven3766, I am glad you like my necklace as much as I do! Thanks so much:)
Efesgirl, thanks for your comment. Yes, it is really large; it's just the way I like it. I am rather tall and small pieces of jewelry get lost on me - at least this is how I feel.
Mikelv85, thanks for your comment. It has been quite a journey to get here. There is so much more to learn and so much more to collect and save from destruction:)

Wow! It's humongous and I love it. Congrats to 1000 as well. Hmmm I find it strange that he is from Canada and you cannot find it there? Maybe his pieces are rare??? Well, you know what I mean. "Rare" used as a loose term. Ok, I have got to get off here for now. See you again!!!
Shareurpassion, thanks so much for your lovely comment. It is really strange not to find more of his work here. I read that Rafael's jewelry was even sold at the airport in the early seventies. I also read somewhere that he/his workshop produced in the neighborhood of a million pieces during his career (So where are all these great items?! Maybe people like me hang on to them or they were discarded like so much costume jewelry!). There are a very few dealers in Toronto selling his jewelry from time to time but their prices are usually rather high:(
fabilus signed to and all the history & so dynamic
