32" Victorian Tooled Leather Barrel Stave Trunk has Patented J. Arnold 1873 fasteners (both working and complete) nifty extra Zinc slat details with 1876 W.L. Mowry slat clamps. Cast iron 1877 J.J. Cowell Trunk Rollers with an 1875 F.W. Mix hasp for trunk lock. Both out of the norm, thick original handles, with flower embossed tin handle caps. Bare wooden bottom a little odd from what I have seen, no interior tray, but does have a remnant of maker on leather lid lift which simply reads Montreal.

I would say around late 1870's give or take a bit,I love the old wood trunks like this, because they refinish so nice, greendog.

Wow! Thanks Drill! So according to your notes, the absolute earliest date for this trunk would start at 1877...I'll take that. That means Greendog is in the zone with his estimate of late 1870's Thanks so much to you both!

Don't get to hung up on patent dates, yes they can help determine a time frame, obviously a trunk can't be made any earlier than the latest patent date, but they can't tell us exactly when it was made, well designed hardware was used for decades, a trunk can have hardware patented in 1880 on it, but was built in 1910-1915, greendog.
