This seems like a huge miter saw to me. Were they used in a simple miter box? Or was there an adjustable frame they rode in?

Can you tell us the length of the blade? Can you read the print on the handle nut? It looks like a Diston Medallion series but hard to tell from the pictures.
The overall length of the saw is 33". The blade has 26" of teeth. I will try to get a better picture of the medallion though it is hard to read even with a printer's loupe. Will I harm the medallion trying to clean it? Thank you for your help.
I cleaned the medallion with a dry toothbrush and a damp paper towel. My wife used her SLR with a macro lens to get a better picture and I have added it to the post.
It is a Disston medallion.

I am thinking it is the 1896-1917 example. That it is H.Disston as opposed to Disston. It will be over 100 years old. A fine piece.
Thank you for the link. I agree it looks like the 1" 1896-1917 example. My first experience dating grandpa's tools. My dad was born in 1914 so grandpa was adding more than just tools in that era.
