These were the other pieces of old bone or ivory that i found along with those old teeth that i posted a few days ago. They appear to be quite old and the large one measures just over 4" inches and the smaller one measures about 3" inches long. The elderley gentleman that passed away had alot of neat old items from his travels when he was in the military i also found some very neat old photo negatives from the 40's and 50's that were from some of his hunts in alaska and canada. I really want to get them developed to see them in full size. If anyone has any ideas what these 2 pieces were used for i would be interested to find out i was told they could have been used for sewing?
I think that they may have been used to make fishing nets . They just do not look like sewing items to me . But I could be wrong .
The top item is a very common form often found in sewing baskets. A sewing stiletto was used to either pull threads or punch holes in fabric that would be sewn around to make eyelet designs. The design on the top can vary, I think I've collected 25+ different forms out of auction box lots. Sometimes they contain a Stanhope charm.
But the same or similar form can also be a fid, used by sailors to pull string for making or repairing nets. Size often determines which it was used for. The fids in my collection are larger and sturdier than the ones found in sewing baskets. . The other item is very interesting but I could see it complimenting a fid to use in net making and repair.
