    I wish i had the mate to this neat earring as i found it along with that neat diamond pendant i posted earlier in the week that had the purple stone in the center. There are no makers marks on the back but it kind of feels and looks like it could be gold. It looks like an older piece but i am no jewelry expert.

      I have several pieces of jewelry with the exact same "star" setting with mine cut diamonds; they date from the mid 1800s to early 1900s. Incredibly interesting piece, I agree with Davyd286, it looks like the earring post was something that was added after.
