this outstanding candleholder has been made at the staatlichen majolika-manufaktur karlsruhe (national majolica manufactory karlsruhe) between 1924 and 1936. it is made in a vibrant orange uranium glaze with very little green spritzdekor (airbrushed) to the top and around the rim of the stand. if you look at it closer there are countless really tiny shimmering metallic particles within the glaze. underneath it shows the impressed old karlsruhe mark, the modelnumber 8297, germany and some handwritten notes to the corner

werner gothein(* 1890 - † 1968 ) grew up in bonn and from 1904 in heidelberg. his father first taught at the university of bonn and then at the university of heidelberg. in 1912, after he got to know the works of ernst ludwig kirchner at an exhibition, he became one of two students at the muim institute in berlin. kirchner and max pechstein founded this educational institution with the complete name modern education in painting (moderner unterricht in malerei). gothein learned painting, sculpture and woodcut technique there. gothein was able to develop his own artistic position in 1918 with a pastel work on georg büchner's woyzeck and around 1920, he devoted himself to the designs for ceramic utility items, which were realized between 1924 and 1936 in the national majolica manufactory karlsruhe and the workshop of velten-vordamm near berlin.

    measurements: height 24.5cm (9.65") - width 21.5cm (8.45") - depth 10cm (3.95")
