I just bought this for my wife. The latches say patent may 21 78. Does anyone have a thought on this?
I looked it up and from what I can tell the hardware is from the late 1800’s but I’m curious about the trunk itself. I saw a sterling that looked similar but not exactly.
Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Great trunk!!! It'd be difficult to say who the manufacturer of this one was. This would be from around the 1880's and referred to as a "Flat Top" or "Packing" trunk. There were so many trunk makers during that period, that without it having a label inside, or the trunk makers mark stamped into the hardware, it's a tough call. Perhaps someone else on CW can be of better assistance to you. Welcome to CW!!!!!

I like the looks of it, because it appears it is complete, and in pretty good shape. I'm cleaning up, and R&Ring (as opposed to a complete restore), an old trunk myself. I have found some info on the "Link" part of the local library which borrows books from other Counties. I found mine in and old Sears , mid 1800's, free pdf catalog online, so you may want to try that as well. Question:, do you have the key for the lock? Is the lock hasp rotated 180 degrees, as it looks to Be? Good Luck!

I'll put my two cent's in, I think were closer to the 1890's with this one, but like jscott0363 said, without a makers label almost impossible to say who the manufacturer was, hundreds of trunk makers used the same hardware, you could have two trunks that look almost identical and yet be made by two different makers, also a lot of trunk makers never put a label in their trunks, good hardware was used for decades, you could have a trunk with patent dates from 1860's, 1870's, 1880's on it and it was made in the 1890's. greendog.

Thank you everyone for your feedback. Yes the middle latch is rotated 180. No I don’t have the key. But I’ve seen them on eBay.

Your lock, should have a key number for it on the lower round part just above the hinge, greendog.

i have an identical trunk from or family homestead ...estimate mid to late 1800s. Mine as a registered trademark...a small gold medallion depicting three elephant heads holding 3 steamer trunks. Will post pic of trunk and attempt pic of trademark. Is anyone familiar with this trademark?
    7. Jacknjef, 7 years ago
Sorry, on closer study they are not identical...will post pix.
