This item is a mystery to me. I have seen many antique kitchen jars but not like this one. At first I thought it may have been used to grate cheese or pepper, but it isn't even close to those two pictures on the web.
Any info would be enlightening.
That is a nutmeg grinder. Can also be used for walnuts etc.
it's a nut meat chopper grinder for soft nuts like walnuts or pecans. that type of chopper blades would not work with grinding nutmeg.
Ok..that makes sense. Do either of you know how old it may be?
probably made c1930s-50s time frame; not familiar with that encircled 'A' makers mark. There would have also be a lid to cover the blades and openings.
try google search for: Federal Tool nut chopper
Great. Thank you all for the information. I'm very grateful for the expertise.
Call me wrong if you will but every holiday season my mother in law ground nutmeg for the eggnog with one of these. They do in fact work for nutmeg.
