Since 1995, hand vases have been on this collector's radar. What is it about them? A compelling amalgam of the surreal & high camp kitsch...the apogee of morbid Victoriana...the Addams Family ambiance that they lend to one's decor...I could go on & on. There are an awful lot of them in this collector's life. Perhaps there's even room for a few more...
Photo 1. Art Deco display cabinet with a variety of glass hand vases from Bohemia, France, England, etc. There's a particularly flamboyant perfume bottle in there that I have not been able to identify...guess it may be French & somewhere between Art Nouveau & Art Deco.
On top of the cabinet are a pair of Victorian bisque porcelain hand vases & a very large, rare, left handed glass hand vase.
Photo 2. More of the same cabinet.
Photo 3. Another cabinet with more specimens, mostly Bohemian & a few unknowns.
Photo 4. The collector & their collection. On the wall are a few Art Deco wall pocket vases which belonged to my late mother. Also a small painting featuring a pair of Victorian Parian porcelain hands that was found in an op shop. It is signed K. Ray & undated, although the style of the frame suggests the 1970s or 1980s. Very much in the style of the early Sydney modernist painter Adrian Feint, who specialised in still life, most of his work featured pieces from his collection of glass & porcelain - including similar Parian hand vases & ornaments. I believe that K. Ray, whoever they were, was strongly influenced by Feint's work.

Really? I had no idea, valentino97. Not my area, I'm afraid. All I meant was a lot of hands were sitting (can hands sit?) about doing nothing. Glad you like the collection.

Yes, that is an old saying. Have you ever heard the expression “a deck of cards is the devils prayer book?” That was one of Ellen Corby’s quotes on The Waltons. She portrayed grandma Walton!!

TimeTraveller, I faintly recall The Waltons on TV as a kid but not that saying. Wow, what would she have thought of TV & the Internet if cards were such a wicked temptation! :-)

Well IronLace! You’re obviously “ Not sitting on your hands” accumulating such a collection. They’re great in my book!

Much appreciated, LOUMANAL! I am definitely an "old hand" at collecting these, have been working on gathering them for 25 years now. Although I have sold a few recently because there are so many I can't display them all...& I'm trying not to get any more, though there are a few rare ones I'm still willing to add to the collection...
