Since seeing all your lovely war era remembrance photo albums, I decided to show some pix & postcards I made into a mini album from the visit my husband and I made to the then-recently docked impressive battleship the USS Missouri, BB 63, in Pearl Harbor Hawaii. This ship was famous for the signing of the peace treaty with Japan ending WW2 on 9/2/46, the postcard shows Fleet Adm Nimitz signing, behind him Gen MacArthur and Adms Halsey & Sherman. Our photos show our walking tour (It could be guided or not, we chose non-guided as my late uncle had been briefly stationed on this ship, & we wanted to see some of his fond memories ourselves). The memorial to the tragic USS Arizona stands right near the Missouri. We walked up & down the very narrow, steep steps to all floors, finding with amusement the pool room my uncle had told us about for the mens recreation, though I didn't see the barber shop he also had mentioned. Officers jackets were preserved in cases, the mens bunk beds as they were, copies of other countries representatives signing the treaty, as well as a raised bubble over a bronze plaque at the very spot of the treaty signing. I signed my uncle's name in a guest comment book, noting that he had served on the Missouri, of which he was extremely proud all his life. The little photo album was purchased in Hawaii, the old painting called Girl With Ukelele.
My husband, ever the clown, thought it was funny to peer into one of the huge guns - hey, do I smell gunpowder lol

Thank you for the kind comment purvis, that's my husband, always clowning around - doubt he would try that if the guns were loaded!

Ken, it was a great day for touring, bright and sunny. And indeed I did feel my uncle's spirit with us as we walked in his steps - he had only passed away a year or so before, and would have so enjoyed seeing his beloved Missouri again

Thank you for the love & comments

These are fantastic photos and a wonderful narrative, too, about your experiences. Thank you for your uncle's service.

T, we would see the U.S.S. Alabama docked in Mobile Bay when we lived in MS and traveled to AL or beyond.

I notice the rising sun flag in the row of flags leading up to the ship. Seems out of place.

Thank you Thomas & Laura for the great kind comments, I tried to give everyone a feel for what it's like visiting a huge battleship, esp one with such a proud history. I'll bet the USS Alabama is a beautiful ship as well, you can feel the power onboard, these ships that helped win the war

I know BB2, it's hard for people to lose the resentment, but the Missouri did the treaty signing in Tokyo Bay, and as well every Pearl Harbor Day for years now the Japanese & American vets come together in HI to preach peace, I think we can forgive but never ever forget the horrors of that war

Many thanks all for the love & kind comments

I toured the “Mighty Mo” back in 2002. I also went over to the USS Arizona Memorial. I remember seeing that plaque where the treaty was signed.

Great pics Jenni!! What an awesome trip that must have been for you and your hubby.

How great that you also took the Mighty Mo tour TimeT, wasn't it fun, how about those narrow ladder-like steps, I thought, built for young slender servicemen lol. It's great you also got to see the Arizona memorial, that museum must've been fantastic

Fort you were the first CW friend I told about this little excursion on one of your ship posts, then as now I thank you for your kind words and appreciation

Thank you Scott, it really was a great day for us, like going back to a forties time capsule, and made me feel really close to my uncle who was a great guy

Your loves & comments are really heartfelt today, I thank you

These are great, my father was stationed in Hawaii during WW2 in the Army.
    18. Newfld Newfld, 7 years ago
Dlpetersen I enjoyed your comment about your dad's time in HI during WW2, I'm sure he had many fond memories of being stationed there (unless God forbid he was there on Pearl Harbor Day), as my uncle always remembered how beautiful it was. I could hardly believe when he told me they were allowed to bunk at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel until I read recently it was true - nice digs!
