I found this 17 inch tall porcelain Mary and Child at Urban Ore yesterday. on the bottom it says ' Bought 2/29/64 at Urban Antiques in San Francisco $40....' and i can't make out the rest. it was covered in nicotine so i couldn't even tell that there was much color until i washed it. any info appreciated.
also there are some numbers impressed into the bottom.
where is the category for 'statue' and 'religious'?
It's a very lovely Madonna and child statue, well preserved for age (you cleaned it nicely), I just wonder about the significance of the ball they are holding - I'm from a Catholic & Protestant background but that mystifies me
Oh my, this is such a beautiful Blessed Virgin Mary holding baby Jesus. Just a wonderful find ho2cultcha!!
thanks Newfld and jscotto! the ball is a globe which probably had a gold cross in the top of it. it was a very common symbol pre-vatican II.
Lovely. I don't think the orb in your piece is necessarily missing the cross. Some devotional works have cross-less orbs (representing Earth) -- meaningful here is that Jesus' hand is placed on top of the orb.
I totally agree with Anik in regards to the cross. I've seen statues, very similar to this one, and none had a cross on the orb.
there's a hole in the top of the orb for a cross.
Beautiful!
Hi ho2cultcha,
You're absolutely correct about the cross. I saw a statue last night that was very similar. It had a cross in the orb.
