I found an addition to my tea cup collection today. It's a very interesting shaped cup, very shallow and wide. It is a pattern in imari colours, and it seems to have been transfer printed then painted over in orange, blue and gilded. The china is very fine and see through, but the hand painting is a little crude, and the cup has specks of grit in it and also a couple of chips in the rim. I have tried looking up this cup and have discovered that Cauldon Ware is dated from 1890 to early 20th century. I havn't found this particular pattern anywhere online, or in any of my tea cup books.

Hi adelec just for interest, how do u identify if it is transfer printed then painted over?

Beautiful set, love the scenic Asian pattern

That's a good question, but I guess the answer is the underlying pink colour is quite fine and even and delicate, unlike the over painting, which is a bit slap dash in parts! I actually think this cup and saucer has the look of a much older one. I've just had a look with a magnifying glass and I'm not absolutely sure it is printed, but I think it is!

I think your cup and saucer is under the bentick pattern c.1905.try googling that!

It's similar to the Bentick pattern, but that seems to be all flowers, whereas my cup and saucer has a temple design and rocks and even a fishing boat.

I love the colors and daintiness of the painting/design!

I know this post is three years old but as you are still an active contributor I thought you might like to know I have a complete tea set of this Cauldonware with the temple design. I think it is beautiful. I received it as a child in Scotland as an heirloom gift from an elderly neighbour and treasure it still, some 50 years later.

Suemac, how lovely that you have a set. It is something to treasure.
