The police were in a hurry and the public screamed "Justice" so Hauptmann paid the price with his life, Years later I believe it
was said aviator Chas A. Lindburgh influenced the trial.
-My great-grandson's grand-father told me years ago that his family had to change their last name to Hutman-- from Hauptmann, because of the stigma that name carried in the day! So , even tho much more recently many Hauptmanns still use the name Hutman, as does my great-grandson and his dad too. I have no idea if the Hauptmann shown in the news clipping before sentencing IS a relative, but I do see an eerie resemblance,
Inae recent news conference, Mrs.Hauptmann asked that New Jersey Gov. Jim Florio declare her husband unfairly convicted. Florio's director of communications, Jon Shure, said later that Bryan had "submitted some documents, and they are being reviewed in the attorney general's office."

The controversy, seemingly endless, persists because the case against Hauptmann was based largely on circumstantial evidence.

Books have been written decrying and upholding the verdict. One of the most recent, "The Lindbergh Case," written in 1987 by James Fisher, a former FBI agent and a professor of criminal justice at Edinboro State College in Pennsylvania, said: "The evidence was overwhelming.

An earlier book, "Scapegoat," by Anthony Scaduto, a former New York Post reporter, contended that "every piece of physical evidence introduced against the accused Lindbergh kidnaper at his trial was either manufactured by the police or distorted by so-called expert witnesses."

Appeals have been rejected by the U.S. Supreme Court several times. Hauptmann's widow has contended through her attorney that her husband was the victim of a conspiracy to conceal evidence. .

What a tragedy for the Hauptmann family. Before DNA testing came into play, so many innocent folks were wrongly accused and sentenced. You hear of so many people who are later proven innocent, as a result of DNA testing, and released after serving many many years in prison. Though they're released, their lives have already been ruined.

You are very welcome. This was found in an old album. I intend to show items of interest from time to tim from it, 1920s-and all the way to 1931
My great grandson now 22. has a great interest in the case!! As he is a Hutman, with the name change. The family said he is Polish so seems they changed his nationality from German to Polish. He is a blond. Someday we will have one of those charts and see for sure. Thanks to those who found interest!!

Going off of what Jscott said, someone here (I think) posted an article on a guy who was released from prison after, like, 5o years. He was deemed innocent, hence his release. In the meantime, though, he had missed the invention of the telephone, electric light, record player, automobile, and aeroplane. What a change!!

Invented evidence by authorities still persists. They simply LIE. I was charged by the feds & put in jail for something that the guilty person told them all along that I was innocent & she acted alone. "He had nothing to do with it !". Never even indicted & yet spent thousands of $'s to beat the b**tards. Worse experience of my life ! When I sued the gov't., they committed felonies to prevent me from collecting in my suit. I was simply attacked ! The federalist won the Civil War, but both sides eventually lost. Sorry if I sound bitter against the gov't., but I still am & it is one of the main reasons I avoid "Gestapo Land". They lie with no feelings for the ones they falsely attack. They just have no human feelings ! Malicious prosecution/persecution is a federal crime, but when have you ever heard of them being prosecuted for that ? Sorry, but I'm still very, very bitter.
