I have a lot of hand vases, but this one that arrived today after a long wait is something different.
Purchased from the Czech Republic, it is said to date from the 1920s. I would be most interested to find out the manufacturer...it seems many makers produced hand vases from the Victorian era onwards, but there is not a lot of documentation available.
This is one of the few hand vases I've seen that has a affinity with Tango glass of the 1920s - 30s. It seems to straddle the Victorian & Art Deco eras in a most curious manner.
It is made from 4 layers of cased glass (which makes it rather heavy). A thick layer of clear on the outside, over white, with orange & green spatter on the interior, which is also overlaid with a pale amber. The 4 broad bands of spatter match up nicely with the 4 way crimped top rim. It measures 21.5 cm tall, 10.5 cm across the top rim, & 8 cm across the base.
It's certainly interesting. The very plain outer with what looks like a pretty thick clear case, and then the absolutely wonderful burst of colour from the interior. I love the colour the green has turned as a result of the amber over it, and the orange pops!
Who thought of that??!!
Yes, it's something of a cut above the basic type of hand vase made from a single layer of milk glass. It looks like quite a bit of thought was put into it. The outer clear casing is extremely thick. The final photo looks oddly like a Murano ashtray from the 1950s, doesn't it?
I have two other hand vases which are comparable in style, so likely by the same maker. One with the same clear/white layers, & the inner lining simply clear amber. The other has a lining of green aventurine spatter, & an applied yellow crest. That one was also purchased from a seller in the Czech Republic.
Gorgeous ! love love
Thanks so much, Manikin!
I have seen mountains of hand vases, and never one like this.... This is a great find!!
Yes, it's certainly different, welzebub...with thanks to Michelle who alerted me to it! It took a while to arrive but very pleased, it looks far better in real life...
Love love love this!
I'm new to this website but joined specifically because of your pictures of glass hand vases! I thought that they were ugly until I saw one in person in an antique market that I couldn't stop thinking about. Of course, I went back for it and that's what started my collection!
Don't know how I missed these.
I have never been a fan of hand vases-- but your two have changed that!
Love these.

Many thanks, aftica1! Hope to see some posts of your collection soon...it will be really interesting to see what you have.
I started collecting hand vases in 1995. For me, I was immediately fascinated by their weirdness. I've always liked strange, oddball things. To me, hand vases are the epitome of sugary Victorian sentimentality, yet they're also surreal, kitsch, & high camp all at once.
Kind regards, Marin.
Many thanks, Scott!
This one sure is different - I think one of the last ones I bought, too. Because I have so many, finding ones I don't already have is a challenge, which is one of the reasons I've pretty much stopped buying them. It would take a very special & unusual one indeed to capture my attention now...there's still a few rare colours & designs on my "bucket list" though, so maybe a few more might come into my life sometime...
Hi Marin,
Are you on facebook? I have a group called "Glass Hand Vases" where I post pictures of my collection - I would love for you to join and share your collection too!
Aftica1
PS. I feel the same now that I have so many glass hand cases that it takes a special one to capture my interest - that said, there are tons of rare ones out there that I'm still looking for and hoping to find one day!
Marin, all I have to say is I want to come see your place! Lori
Hi Aftica1,
No, I don't use Facebook, CW is the closest I get to any form of social media. I have ethical & privacy concerns with social media in general.
Lori, you're more than welcome to a virtual tour! :-)
Marin,
I tend to share your views on social media - although I find with strict privacy settings, I prefer facebook to any other medium. Even this setting is a little too open for me. But I specifically joined because of my love of hand vases - now let's see if I can figure out how to post my white/red one to share with you!
