In 1992 in Metcalfe Twp. Ontario a farm family died out and this ticket, tightly folded , was found in a Victorian Lap Desk purchased by my neighbour. The ship was the John Howell a sailing clipper built in St.John New Brunswick for the Red Cross Line an American Shipping Company.
The family came from northern England, just north of the Lake District. The Law family included Sarah Ann a 6 month old , a John Moore who may be Jane's father . the maritime museum Liverpool has a ticket from October 1856 which they listed as the 7th most important item in their archives a few years back
I almost shed a tear as an immigrant myself for this family keeping an item that millions? threw away soon after landing not dreaming that it would survive their descendants.. Incidentally they occupied 2 cabins as listed on the back of the ticket
Great piece of history, thanks for sharing.
How neat.
