    Hello,

My wife has been eyeing this particular set of cups and saucers for some 60 years now and she has just inherited them, they are not for sale but curiosity as to their background is tweaked.
We believe they were a wedding gift to the grandmother. They are extremely fine material and the designs are hand painted.
The underside of the saucer has what appears to be an insignia of a butterfly, the cup has no markings what-so-ever.
If you can shed any light on the background on these cups and saucers it would be appreciated.

    Thank you

    Basil

I believe your mark is upside down, and may be Mt Fuji in Japa, although it is a little worn. Similar pieces to yours were being made during 1900 -30’s. The word Nippon loosely translates to “Japan” so if you look at other Nippon collectors sites or Noritake collectors site, you may find similar styles. Here is a great link to a free website where you can look at maker’s marks, and also get an appraisal for a small fee

I’m with Mary on this one, Basil. Porcelain production in Australia was minimal at the time this was made. Production of cups was also a bit of a political joke until after WWII.
