(1778 items)
I've had the 'odd' blue one of these for years, but only recently noticed it actually has a small gold paper 'maker's label' on its bottom, identifying it as "MADE IN JAPAN TAKAHASHI SAN FRANCISCO". Frankly, the only reason I even saw it is because, last weekend, I noticed and looked at another little blue candleholder just like it (which also had the label) at an estate sale, though I didn't actually *buy* that one. [I should have... <dohhh>] BUT ANYWAY -- today, I found it a pair (!) of new 'mates' at Goodwill -- one red and one blue, in a slightly different shape but with the same little oval labels on them.
[whoops...another "collection" begins...?? <LOL>]
They are all 2-1/2" across and 4-1/2" tall, dished in about half an inch on top. (presumably to hold a 'votive type' candle and/or candle cup, though they could also hold a solid 2" pillar candle) Their festive color is glazed only on the outside as their tops, bottoms, and insides are glazed white.
Does anybody happen to know any fun info about TAKAHASHI?? The only references I've found so far suggest Mr. Takahashi came to San Francisco after WWII, then managed to build a successful business there importing (I guess?) Japanese china. I also really haven't found any other items styled quite like these, it appears most TAKAHASHI china is much more conventionally (fancy!!) decorated, including lots of dinnerware pieces.
I likewise don't really know how old they are, though I am guessing maybe 1960's-70's. (because they just kinda seem to have that "vibe" about 'em...?) Also gotta wonder how many other variations of shape/color are lurking out there for me to discover in the future -- I'll be keeping my eye out now, for sure?! <LOLOL>
THANKS SO MUCH for the <loves> from buckethead, Anik, TassieDevil, jscott0363, & Newfld -- I'm happy y'all are enjoying my latest 'accidental collection' along with me?! <LOL>
I have seen a bit of Japanese glass with the Takahashi label AO, and it's usually quite funky and useful, like glass canisters etc. That's all I can add, apart from saying I really love these!
More THANKS for the <loves> to fortapache and Caperkid, also to racer4four for your nice comment -- I hadn't thought to look for Takahashi glass...I suppose I should go and try that?! :-) :-) :-)
Additional THANKS now due to iggy, aura, Lise, ho2cultcha, & freiheit for your continuing <love its>! :-) :-) :-)
