I found this 3 ft wooden gem at an estate sale. The previous owner didn’t know much about it. I’d love to receive feedback from any experts out there that may be familiar with wood carved dragons! There’s no signature or identification marks. Thanks!

      It's an extraordinary work!
It appears to be a Chinese dragon of high order, so designed for nobility or high ranking official. Any idea of the wood type?

I don’t know for sure the type of wood. I tried looking up ways to identify it, but can’t say definitively. It’s a light white to blond color and the bark is more grey. It’s a sold carving that’s realitivly heavy, not super light. But if I had to guess more medium hardness when it comes to wood. So it resembles cottonwood the most to me. I’m thinking of getting it appraised to learn the value of this gem. What type of appraiser would you recommend? Thanks

I would add an image in daylight of the carved figurine as the camera flash can really distort the colors and textures. There are many types of appraisers you can approach, either in person or by internet. Auction houses offer free appraisals these days, museums with an interest for Asian items, even Barnabys who have a link at the top of this page, for a small amount of money. Good luck. Unusual carved dragon piece.

Great thanks so much! I was considering using Barnabys but didn’t know enough about the business like if it was reliable. But maybe I’ll give them a try. Do you think they’ll know the type of wood just by looking at a few pictures?
