German Army Dagger from WWII. Found in my grandfather's attic, he was medic in WWII in Germany. He recently passed away at the age of 103. We would like to know more information on this dagger as well as if it is worth anything.

What you have is a WW II German officer's dagger, made by F.W. Holler, of Soligen. This company manufactured bayonets and other types of blades such as this one. The Soligen region is known for their fine blades. Unfortunately the silver wire is missing from the pommel, and some of the finish is missing on the crossguard and the scabbard. The blade also looks to have some scratching. In this condition the value may be in the area of $250.00-$300.00.

Desirable Holler, Army officer's dagger; never had or was not manufactured with a wire pommel (grip).
You would have to look long and hard to find one like it for $300, try 5 or 6 hundred; in that condition, 1000 to 1200 in perfect condition!

      Should read "SoliNgen".

I sold a vet purchased one in the mid to late 90s for about $450- $500. While I don't track the Nazi market, I'd expect prices to be lower now as they seem to be in MOST antique and collector fields.

Hard to tell if this is original just by the photos, these Nazi daggers are some of the most copied or reproduced blades around. If original, I am sure it is worth way more than $2k in the current condition. If this is in deed an original, it is a GREAT piece! If it is a re-pop, than it is just plain junk.

I have a few original Nazi pieces myself including an original SS Honor Ring or "Totenkopfring", which was given as an award from Himmler to the truly elite.

According to website posted by blair: "Because the army grew to enormous proportions early in the Reich, this dagger was produced in large number. Accordingly, examples of this dagger type are both numerous and affordable on today's collector market."

      Rarity level is "common".

A quick search on dealer websites shows many FOR SALE in the $400- $600 range.

Here is an example of same maker at $495:

Scottvez, I HIGHLY doubt that dagger is authentic for $495! In addition that dagger appears to be in MINT condition with ZERO signs of aging or use based on the photograph, a DEAD giveaway that it is a re-pop!

The dagger is being sold by the guy who WROTE the book on Nazi edged weapons:

Where are you getting your information?

      Scottvez,
That link you posted and the clown who considers himself to be the AUTHORITY figure and author of Nazi edged weapons, well he can write whatever he wants. It's funny, he has HUNDREDS of Nazi daggers for sale on his website that all start on average around $1k There are NOT anywhere near this number of AUTHENTIC NAZI GERMANY daggers that have survived! NOT 1 of his daggers for sale has the makers year listed! The daggers for sale that he has, most of them, if not all of them are reproductions. This means they might even have been made well after the war ended (Maybe even still today) but were NOT authentic and were never used by Nazi Germany. This is a big deal for collectors of Nazi memorabilia! Collectors don't want post was junk.

What is YOUR source of information?

What reference books do you use?

How many Nazi German daggers survived?

    13. zguy2112 zguy2112, 12 years ago
I mean I would HOPE that the daggers he is selling for $18k would be authentic, but lets face it...it is a HUGE jump from $495. to $18,000. Right?

      http://www.rockislandauction.com/viewitem/aid/56/lid/3484
      http://www.2-clicks-swords.com/article/german-daggers.html

The first link above is an authentic Nazi dagger that sold for over $6k at auction in near perfect condition (Same condition as MOST daggers for sale today are pictured in, but 99% of them are re-pops)

The second link above is the history of Nazi daggers and as you read it you will see these millions of these daggers were made, but few have survived. They were ONLY produced from 1933 - 1942 (so ANY daggers produced after 1942 are NOT authentic) Hope this helps.

Your comparison is Apples to Oranges-- comparing an SA Dagger(looks to be mint) to an Army Dagger.

You still haven't answered the questions:

What is YOUR source of information?

What reference books do you use?

How many Nazi German daggers survived?

I find it interesting that you refer to the author of several books on German edged weapons as "the clown who considers himself to be the AUTHORITY figure" and then you use an unattributed article from "2 Click Collectable Swords" to TRY and support your argument!

      scottvez,
My sources for this information come from various places, including a few very serious Nazi memorabilia collectors who have been collecting authentic relics since the end of WW II. There is no single book(s) that will give you the specific information you are requesting. As you know, relics do continue to surface from time to time but it is difficult to say exactly how many Nazi daggers have survived today.

After many attempts, I finally was able to connect with your source who is the author of the Nazi edged weapons and I asked him about the dagger he is selling for $495. After communicating with him, I have come to the conclusion that the majority of his daggers for sale can NOT be authenticated as original Nazi daggers (at least the daggers for under $5k in price)

As you may know, or can easily find out by doing a simple search, Nazi daggers are one of the most heavily reproduced WW II relics and there are a lot more re-pops out there than originals. And at a price of under $500. it is simply not possible that one will be able to purchase an authentic WW II Nazi dagger, unless of course the seller believes it to be a re-pop OR the seller has no idea what the current value would be on such a scarce relic. Hope this was of some help.

As you may know or can easily find out with simple research prices are determined by type, rarity, condition, seller, etc...

Where do you find THIS type of dagger, in this condition, selling habitually for $2,000+ ?

    19. blunderbuss2 blunderbuss2, 12 years ago
I'm going to stay away from this with the exception of saying that I figure $4-500 for an orig. army dress dagger. That is even questionable in this sick economy where nobody is buying collectables. Something is only worth what somebody will pay & nobody is paying much for anything now. A year from now it might only bring $50-100 at the rate things are going.

I have one just like this I got from my great uncle who brought it home from the war
