Here are three early american lanterns. The circular punched tin lantern was found on Martha's Vinyard, Mass. It was hand made by a tinsmith somewhere in the mid 1800's or possibly earlier. When a candle is lit, the pierced tin design is projected 360 degrees around the room. With it is a hand forged iron hook.
The smallest lantern is fueled by oil and has a wick. The openings are for ventilation.
The last lantern is made of thin sheet brass and has cut outs which also project the pattern around the room when a candle is lit. On each side are two pieces of colored glass with patterns impressed into them.
