Here is another example of a French St. Louis opaline glass vase from about 1880; it is the same shape as my other peony vase pair, but this one features very finely painted birds in flight, accompanied by Prunus blossoms on a delicate branch. The Japonisme design influence that was very popular at the time is clearly seen in this decoration. Also, the entire body of the vase is covered in a hand painted pattern that imitates the fine crazing that one might see on an old porcelain vase. It is unsigned (or the signature has worn away) but is 8" tall, and as I mentioned, exactly the same shape and height (8" tall) as my other signed pair of St. Louis vases.

Another wonderful addition to your French glass collection. The depiction of the birds is so delicate, they look light as air!

Gillian, thanks so much! Basically, it is flowering cherry or plum (both in the Prunus family) but in Japanese decors, they usually call them Prunus. :)

Thank you so much, Peggy. I was thrilled to find this one not too long after I bought the peony vases. (I had been stalking those for months and months!) It is really amazing to see how finely the birds are painted - I'd love to see the brushes they used!

Thanks Karen - you are right, they are swallows! They were such a popular bird to use in this era. I have several vases featuring swallows in flight. Maybe people loved the movement they can depict? :)
