What style and era is this dresser? Is it walnut? Is it rare? I inherited it from a southern relative, in case that helps.

Not rare, but nice solid wood and a form that I really like.

It is Amercian Empire-- dates from about the 1830s- 1860s. It is hard to tell the wood without a closeup of the grain.

These are not popular right now. About 25 to 30 years ago, these would bring in the $600- $900 range; now they bring about a third of that.

Thanks Scott! That all fits together, knowing the person who gave it to me.

If you post a close up of the grain in a few spots, I'd be happy to try and ID the wood.

Based on what I can see I'd lean toward cherry with mahogany veneers.
