Small wood carving of a man's head and shoulders

This little carving is really well done, 7" h x 3" w x 3" d. I found it at a Goodwill for $2. Just a fun/spooky little piece. No information found about the artist. I think it is a bit too good to be a high school project, so maybe an art school project or the work of a trained artist. I think that the price tag suggests that it was exhibited. It is dated 1987 and I can't believe that his glasses stayed on for 31 years. No idea what kind of wood this is. Just a fun little thing, though he does stare at me.
