Welcome to CW, nice truck. Someone I'm sure will know more about this.
The lock was made by Excelsior and the 2262 happens to be the key number you'd need to work the lock. The trunk is a flat top packing trunk for the lat 1800's. Looks to be in good condition, with the exception of the broken handles (typical of trunks this age) and the gold painted hardware. Welcome to CW!!!
Just trying to help, so please excuse me me, but this is not a packing trunk. It is a travel trunk from the early 1900's. A packing trunk was a inexpensive, paper covered trunk that usually did not even have latches, tray, and had an inexpensive lock with a 1869 patent. They are often called Civil War Era trunks because of the Patent, but the same lock was used until the early 1900's. Packing trunks were our equivalent of a cardboard moving box. Travel trunks had to withstand the rigors of travel for multiple seasons and so they had better locks, latches, trays, etc.
