It was Autumn of 1968 and I had been back in LA for about two weeks since my government sponsored tour of Southeast Asia. Somehow I managed to get tickets to the final dress rehearsal for the West Coast opening of HAIR (The American Tribal Love Rock Musical). This is the program from that night. This is the cast I saw. James Rado and Gerome Ragni, creators of the show, appeared in the lead roles of Claude and Berger, respectively. Ben Vereen was there. Tommy Smothers joined the love-in scene (but I don't remember him taking his clothes off). Percussionist Cubby O'Brien led the musicians - people old as me will remember Cubby as one of the original Mousketeers. And of course the unforgettable Sheila was played by blonde hippie goddess Jennifer (Warnes) - still busy as an amazing artist in her own right.
I heard a report the other day opining that the movie THE GRADUATE was the (Pop) cultural highlight of 1968. I would like to think that HAIR has had a more lasting impact.
