Recently bought this Westinghouse WD-12 Coca-Cola cooler from a posting on Facebook. It is in overall good condition. The lid shows expected wear from a unit likely made almost 70 years ago. The serial number on this unit begins with 1054 leading me to think it was made in October of 1954. A retired Coca-Cola service man confirmed this is likely the case. WD-12’s were made through about 1956 according to what I’ve read. It is currently being re-wired and will get a new thermostat, new bottle opener and new rubber bumpers that the lid rests on when open. The interior galvanized steel is in great condition and ready for use. I have no intentions of restoring this case as the patina and wear just speak to its history and age and only add to its appeal.
That's a nice one! I agree, looks incredible as is.
I just purchased the Westinghouse WD-12 for my husband. It works but it too needs rewriting as things are exposed and frayed. In your description, you mentioned yours was being rewired. Did you have a general electrician do this or was it someone who needed to provide specialty services? Ours looks extremely similar to yours in terms of condition and we made the decision not to refurbish. The history is a wonderful part to retain. Beautiful piece!
