Hiya! I've been trying to find info on my lovely mama doll for many years. She's pretty large, about 26" or more. She doesn't cry anymore. She winds up with a key in her side, which is what I find unusual. Then she makes a rumbling sound like a big truck is going by :) it scares People! I thought she might have a record player mechanism Inside? No marks anywhere. Hard plastic head anywhere did molded hair under her wig. Her limbs are rubbery, probably "magic skin" of some type. Cloth body. Please tell someone Knows! Thank you :)
UPDATE: Curiosity got the best of me and I opened her up myself. 5 min tops. Just a twisted bit of wire to undo, removed her head and some stuffing to see what's inside. Pics above. It's a paper tube with metal crier inside. Bottom is tarnished, no marks. There's a little dowel from the crier to the key outside. Not a music box. It would be nice to get it fixed up:) anyone know anything about the doll or the crier? Thank you
She's very pretty and has lifelike limbs, good design. Looks nice next to your dangle earring collection
The key likely was a music box in her but I am wondering if she is on original body to her ? Can I see her neck how it is attached to body ?
Hiya manikin! I haven't checked back here in a while. Yes, I believe her body is original to her. Hmm... I never thought of her being a music box doll. I'll have to try looking that up. I kept thinking there was a voice box/record device inside. All she does is make a rumbling noise now. Poor girl! I will have to take more pictures when I get home. Thank you!
I looked around and didn't find much on vintage musical mama dolls. I keep seeing this one doll that intrigues me and also has a key wound mechanism. It's the "Schilling Mechanical Talking Doll". This one has a phonograph inside which works with the key. The look of the doll is similar to mine, but I can'tell find any that have a wig. They have molded hair from what I can tell.
Yours did not talk . Pretty Mama Doll if she is unmarked hard to tell who her maker was . She seems to have a hard plastic face or vinyl is it hard or soft ?
She's in the dolly shop right now for a good cleaning. Her limbs are early vinyl and her legs had gotten "sticky". They're going to take a look and see what's inside. They said that they might be able to get her in working order again depending on what happens. I'll let you know.
Mankin, she has a hard plastic head and early vinyl limbs. Cloth body with a round speaker and key. My doll people couldn't IDand were hesitant to open her up. She did make a noise at some point. I remember that. I can't find any mama dolls from the 1940s that just played music. Or had a key like that on the outside. Please show me if you have.
