Here's another thing my friend found at the heir to Gump's in San Francisco. It's a very old hardwood ladle with a silver tip on the 12 inch long handle. I wonder where it's from and what it was used for? any ideas?

My only comment would be regarding the wood. Looking at the grain and color in an enlarged image would tend to indicate to me it is African Padauk hardwood or a wood of the same species, A/K/A Vermillion. Looks to have been hand carved and scraped as opposed to having been turned on a lathe. Fresh cut the wood has an orange color to it but ages to a brownish and sometimes brown gray in color. It is subject to tear out when carved which would explain some of the imperfections like on the side.
